The Indian brown mongoose, Herpestes fuscus is among the six species of mongoose found in India. can be distinguished from other by its dark fur, black legs and thick, furry conical tail. Brown has a restricted disjunct distribution, with two populations nominate H. f. Western Ghats (Karnataka Kerala) Southern India three subspecies along western coast Sri Lanka. In southern India, been recorded wet evergreen forests altitudes ranging between 450 to over 2,000 m a.s.l. Recently it Tadoba-Andheri Tiger Reserve, about 160 km south Pench, also Maharashtra.
